A bill preventing any state from setting a stricter emission standard than the national standard is one step closer to becoming law after it passed the House of Representatives.
Sponsored by U.S. Rep. Bob Latta (R., Bowling Green), the Preserving Choice in Vehicle Purchases Act targets California, which has announced plans to phase out internal combustion engines by 2035.
Because California and the 17 states that follow its vehicle standards account for 40 percent of the new car market, a ban there would effectively be a national ban.
The bill now heads to the U.S. Senate for consideration. Mr. Latta is co-leading the legislation with Reps. John Joyce (R., Pa.), Gus Bilirakis (R. Fla.), and Jay Obernolte (R. Calif.).
“Americans should be able to make choices — and vehicle purchases — that work best for themselves and their families,” Mr. Latta said Thursday. “This is a win for consumer choice, and I’m proud to have worked alongside Representatives Joyce, Bilirakis, and Obernolte on the Energy and Commerce Committee to advance this commonsense and necessary legislation.”
