MONROE — Mayoral seats in Monroe, Adrian, and Morenci are contested, and multiple school funding requests are coming before voters in Monroe and Lenawee counties.
The Monroe race is between incumbent Mayor Robert E. Clark and challenger Devan Rucker, a rematch of the race Mayor Clark won in 2021. Mr. Rucker owns a local marketing business, the DEVelopment Group.
Two of Monroe’s council seats also are contested, as is the race for clerk/treasurer.
In Adrian, incumbent Mayor Angie Sword Heath is opposed by Allan V. Heldt, a two-term city councilman and local business owner.
In Morenci, Jeffrey M. Lampson and Tracy Schell are running for mayor. Six candidates are running for three open council seats.
Tecumseh has four candidates vying for three council seats, as well as a proposed charter revision.
School funding issues in Monroe County include a two-part vote inside the Bedford Public Schools district, one which calls for an 18-mill renewal for 10 years. The other would allow additional mills to be assessed in the event of a financial crisis.
The Ida Public School District has proposed a 2.65-mill increase over 7.5 years to help pay for about $9 million of capital improvements at Ida’s elementary-middle-high school complex. Money from that proposed “sinking fund” would be used in part to phase out the boiler system in favor of geothermal-based heating and air conditioning.
Airport Community Schools wants voters to approve a $30 million bond sale to pay for a major expansion and renovation of Wagar Middle School. A levy increase of 0.98 mills is proposed.
In Lenawee County, Sand Creek Community Schools wants to borrow $15.1 million to improve its elementary school building and install better technology. It is seeking a 5-mill increase for 25 years.
Tecumseh Public Schools are seeking a renewal of its 18-mill levy for five years.
