The safety committee of Sylvania City Council will take up further discussion of a proposed ordinance related to drug testing minors.
Councilman Doug Haynam proposed the ordinance last month in response to a new drug-testing policy to take effect at Sylvania Schools in the fall. It would require anyone seeking to test a minor to inform parents or legal guardians 30 days in advance and allow them to be present for the process. Failure to do so would be a misdemeanor offense.
The schools’ new policy, which the Sylvania Board of Education approved unanimously April 15, requires all students in grades 9 through 12 who participate in athletics, extracurricular and cocurricular activities, and clubs, or who drive to school or attend school dances, to submit to random drug testing. Parents can also volunteer their children for the testing pool.
Council on Monday referred the ordinance to the safety committee after a second reading. The committee will meet 7 p.m. June 24 in council chambers, 6635 Maplewood Ave.
