What to expect on your commute: The Blade's Road Warrior, 7/1

Each week during the construction season, The Blade’s Road Warrior highlights the major construction projects in Toledo and the surrounding area, noting where delays are worst and where the best alternative routes are.

Avoid southbound I-75 south of Toledo on Monday and Tuesday evenings.

Already narrowed to two lanes in the new work zone, the southbound side will drop to a single lane between Wales and Buck roads those nights -- from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. — while barrier wall is set up to divide the southbound side so northbound traffic can cross over starting next week.

Through traffic should consider using I-280 to State Rt. 795 to avoid downtown construction. If you’re heading to Wood County after a Mud Hens game or other evening activity, you could use the Martin Luther King Jr. Bridge or the Anthony Wayne Bridge to cross the Maumee River and then take Miami Street, or use one of the east side’s north-south roads (East Broadway, Tracy Road, or Oregon Road) to Route 795.

Also happening early this week is the start of crossover traffic on northbound I-75 just north of the Ohio/Michigan border. Aaron Jenkins, a Michigan Department of Transportation spokesman, said that shift is planned for Monday night, or Tuesday night at the latest.

I-75 will have two lanes each way from near the state line to Exit 5 (Erie) for the rest of the construction season while the northbound pavement is rebuilt. Northbound Exit 2 is closed, so use Exit 5 instead.

1. I-75: Reconstruction reduces traffic to two lanes each way between the DiSalle Bridge and the Downtown Viaduct. Northbound I-75 regularly backs up across the DiSalle during rush hours. Ramps at Collingwood/Erie are closed, as is the southbound entrance at South Avenue. Off-peak lane closings possible near Dorr and Indiana during bridge work, with Dorr (State Rt. 246) closed to all traffic.

2. I-75: One of three southbound lanes closed from the DiSalle Bridge to Buck to set up two-way traffic zone between Wales and Buck. A second lane is closed at night Monday and Tuesday. Additional closings start July 8.

3. State Rt. 25 (Anthony Wayne Trail): Two inbound lanes and one outbound lane closed between Western and Collingwood for bridge replacement. City Park closed on both sides of the Trail.

4. U.S. 24 (Detroit Avenue): One-way northbound from Byrne to Copland for street reconstruction. Southbound traffic detoured via Glendale and the Anthony Wayne Trail. Two-way traffic maintained from Byrne to the Trail.

The recently completed modern roundabout at Detroit Avenue and Byrne and Devonshire roads is seen in an aerial photo on Tuesday.

South Toledo roundabout opens, but Detroit Avenue roadwork not done yet

5. Anthony Wayne Bridge: Traffic reduced to one lane each way for lighting installation.

6. I-475/U.S. 23, U.S. 24: Ramp from southbound I-475 to westbound U.S. 24 closed for partial reconstruction. A detour within the interchange is posted; delay is likely because of slow-moving trucks.

7. I-280, Ohio Turnpike: Ramps from southbound I-280 to the turnpike, and from the turnpike to State Rt. 420 are closed for bridge work. Posted detours use a turnaround on Route 420 for the I-280 ramp and Exit 1 on I-280 for the Route 420 ramp.

8. State Rt. 51 (Monroe): Lane closings, Talmadge to Seckinger, for repaving. Expect major delays.

9. Heatherdowns/Perrysburg-Holland/Garden, Ohio Turnpike: Lane closings and minor detours at these streets’ intersection for reconstruction. Perrysburg-Holland closed at the Ohio Turnpike for bridge replacement. Intermittent lane closings possible on the turnpike.

10. I-280: Northbound exit at Woodville/Curtice interchange closed for bridge painting through July 20. Use Navarre or Walbridge interchanges instead.

11. State Rt. 184 (Alexis): Lane closings, Acres to Flanders, for finish work on repaving project.

12. I-75: Southbound ramp to Lagrange Street is closed during service-road reconstruction until mid-August. Use the Phillips exit instead, or detour via Manhattan.

13. Front Street: Street reconstruction closes lanes in the Front/Consaul intersection through mid-July. Traffic reduced to one lane each way from Consaul to beyond Wheeling for resurfacing.

14. Buck Road, Lime City Road: Buck restricted to eastbound only near Lime City and Lime City closed entirely between Buck and Mandell during roundabout construction.

15. State Rt. 120 (Cherry): Lane closings for repaving, Greenbelt to Summit. Intersecting streets may be blocked at times.

16. I-75: Reduced to two lanes each way from the state line to Exit 5 for the northbound lanes’ reconstruction.

17. U.S. 20 (Reynolds): Lane closings, Glendale to Angola, for resurfacing.

18. Whiteford Center Road: Closed just north of the state line for reconstruction. Use Secor instead.

19. Hull Prairie Road: Closed to through traffic, Roachton to River, during pavement reconstruction.

OFF THE MAP

I-75 (Ohio): Reduced speed limits and nighttime lane closings through Findlay for reconstruction and widening. Northbound exit to, and southbound entrance from, U.S. 68/State Rt. 15 closed until late 2020, but Toledo-Columbus traffic isn’t affected. Nighttime lane closings possible on I-75 near the State Rt. 64/105 interchange in Bowling Green for bridge reconstruction, and Routes 64/105 are closed across the I-75 bridge during reconstruction of ramp intersections into roundabouts. Use Poe Road instead.

U.S. 6/20: Eastbound ramps at the Fifth Street interchange in Fremont are closed for reconstruction through July. Detour to nearby interchanges.

U.S. 6: Flag zones between Sandusky County Road 232 and the Erie County line for resurfacing, and in Williams County for bridge work.

U.S. 20: Closed starting Monday between Fulton County roads 5 and 6 through July 31 for culvert replacement. Detour via State Rt. 109, U.S. 20A, and State Rt. 64.

U.S. 23: Lane closings just south of Carey, Ohio for bridge work and paving between Carey and Upper Sandusky.

State Rts. 15/18/66: Clinton Street Bridge in Defiance is closed for replacement. Through traffic must detour via the Route 281 bridge or Baltimore Street and U.S. 24.
