Last section of DiSalle Bridge demolished

A boom sound heard Saturday night in the Toledo region was the last remaining section of the DiSalle Bridge over the Maumee River being demolished, the Ohio Department of Transportation said.

Traffic on I-75 was temporarily stopped between Detroit Avenue and Buck Road while crews cleared any debris, ODOT said in its announcement on social media.

The demolition makes way for the completion of a new bridge and ultimately reconstruction of I-75 between Buck Road and South Avenue, ODOT said.

The I-75 bridge named for Michael DiSalle, a former Toledo mayor and Ohio governor, opened on Nov. 22, 1963, by coincidence, the day President John F. Kennedy was assassinated.

Traffic on Detroit Avenue enters the Anthony Wayne Trail after getting a green light in this drone view from Aug. 22. The foreground leg of Detroit is to be severed during an upcoming Trail rehabilitation project between this intersection and Monclova Road, southwest of downtown Maumee.

At the time of its construction, it was the longest at 3,401 feet and the most expensive Maumee River crossing. It was 203 feet longer than the Anthony Wayne Bridge and cost $13.4 million to construct.
