All northbound and southbound I-75 lanes are open following repairs to an overpass that was damaged Friday evening.
The Detroit Avenue overpass was damaged Friday when a truck with a raised bed hit the underside of the bridge.
Construction engineer Kyle Ruedel said the long detour around the roadwork was “a major inconvenience” for drivers but necessary for safety.
“The biggest reason is the amount of traffic that I-75 handles,” he said. “We just can’t dump that volume onto a city street, whether that be Detroit Avenue or Anthony Wayne Trail. ... So we detoured an interstate to an interstate.”
On its social media pages, ODOT posted a video of contractors removing the damaged beam and placing a temporary barrier wall on Detroit Avenue.
Detroit will remain closed for several days until temporary fencing is installed over the interstate, officials said.
Safety is a concern, and everything from the detour to the work being done by contractors “adds to the overall safety of the impact that everybody who is affected by this has to endure this weekend,” Mr. Ruedel said.
