U.S. 24 near Maumee, Navarre Avenue are hottest road-work spots in early spring

Drainage repairs on westbound U.S. 24 between Monclova Road and Fallen Timbers are causing tie-ups in the area, particularly on the ramps feeding traffic from I-475/U.S. 23, ODOT cautioned last week.

The cloverleaf ramp from northbound I-475 to westbound U.S. 24 has long been a bit of a problem because of slow-moving trucks climbing it and then needing to merge into U.S. 24 in the same space that vehicles coming out of Maumee wish to exit U.S. 24 toward southbound I-475.

Until the drainage work is finished, there’s no left lane for through traffic to avoid this lane jockeying and otherwise get around the slower vehicles coming off the interstate.

It would be nice to have the new southbound entrance from U.S. 20A as an alternative route onto I-475, but ODOT and its contractor set other priorities.

More detail has come through about the two-week extension of eastbound Navarre Avenue’s closing at I-280 since that was revealed Wednesday.

While there were a few weather-delay days early in the gas line project that prompted the closing, that’s to be expected in mid-February.

The main reason for the extension is that at least one local asphalt-mix plant opened up within the past week or so, which is a bit earlier than normal. So while Columbia Gas and the city expected the excavation in Navarre’s eastbound lanes at Wheeling Street to be covered with a temporary patch and then permanently repaired later, project leaders now expect to get a final surface done by the end of next week.

So while it might have seemed like there was a substantial delay somewhere, the detour’s continuation represents getting finished pavement sooner than previously expected.

• I-75: Lane closings at Lime City Road, north of the Ohio Turnpike, for bridge painting.

• I-75: Lane closings possible at Hancock County Road 99 during an overpass replacement and interchange reconstruction project.

• I-75 (Mich.): Northbound lane closings possible after Exit 5 (Erie Road) for finish work after the reconstruction project last year.

• U.S. 24: Westbound left lane closed from Monclova Road to Fallen Timbers for drainage work. Backups are possible on the ramps from I-475/U.S. 23 as well as on the U.S. 24 mainline.

• I-475/U.S. 23: Lane closings possible for finishing work after the recent widening project between U.S. 24 and Angola Road.

• Martin Luther King, Jr. Bridge: Reduced to one lane each way for repairs and reconfiguration related to the Glass City River Walk.

• State Rts. 65 (Summit Street) and 120 (Cherry Street): Summit closed for reconstruction between Walnut and Cherry streets until July, while Cherry is reduced to one lane each way between Huron Street and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Bridge. No left turn from westbound Cherry to Summit or Superior Street, and left turns from Cherry to Huron are nearly impossible during peak travel times. Superior has right turns only at Cherry.

• Broadway Street: One-way southbound between Western and South avenues for water main replacement and street reconstruction.

• Summit Street (Mich.): The I-75 Exit 2 connector has one lane open, governed by traffic signals, during bridge reconstruction between I-75 and Suder Avenue. Use Exit 5 (Erie Road) as an alternative.
