Martin L. Mosakowski (1940-2016): Retired police officer a detail-oriented worker

Martin L. Mosakowski, a former patrol officer with the Toledo Police Department who ended his career in the property room, died Friday in ProMedica Toledo Hospital. He was 75.

Mr. Mosakowski died from heart failure after being sick for nine weeks, daughter Janine Petry said.

The Toledo native was known to friends and family for being a hard and detail-oriented worker — it was a quality that helped him throughout his life, one dedicated to servicing the Toledo community.

“He was a real kind person,” his wife, Carol Mosakowski, said. “Anything I wanted, he never objected to it. He was very good to me.”

Born Nov. 1, 1940, he graduated from Macomber High School in Toledo and joined the U.S. Army Reserve as a military police officer. He liked the work, Mrs. Mosakowski said, and decided to join the Toledo Police Department in 1967.

For most of his police career, he worked as a street cop in West Toledo near Alexis Road. Richard Keith shared a shift with Mr. Mosakowski, and while they were stationed in different neighborhoods, Mr. Teith remembers him as easygoing.

“He had a good disposition. He worked well with other people and with the public,” Mr. Teith said.

About 10 or 15 years before he retired, his wife said, Mr. Mosakowski moved to the property room.

According to J.P. Smith, who acted as sergeant over Mr. Mosakowski before both retired in 1998, the property room didn’t provide much space for relaxation. As one of three workers, he shared a small office and logged evidence when it came in.

Because of a defunct computer system, they had to do most of their job by hand.

“We were known as the people under the stairs,” Mr. Smith said. “These guys, especially Marty, knew their job, and they knew all the institutional lore.”

Mr. Smith said Mr. Mosakowski played a large role during one of the strangest property room jobs he remembers: During a high school homecoming weekend, the police recovered nearly 50 stolen concrete geese yard ornaments. They had to store the heavy objects in the property room as they waited for the geese to be claimed by their owners.

In the end, about half of the geese were returned to their rightful yards.

After retiring, Mr. Mosakowski stayed involved with the police department through the Fraternal Order of Police, the Toledo Police Patrolman’s Association, the Retired Police Officer’s Association, the American Legion Police Post 512, and the Maumee-Bowling Green Elks Lodge 1850.

He also liked to go fishing in Canada with his friends from the force, Mrs. Mosakowski said.

Surviving are his wife, Carol; daughters, Jolene Farnsworth, Janine Petry, and Rebecca Hartkopf; brother, Timothy, and seven grandchildren.

Funeral services will begin today at 9:45 a.m., with prayers at W.K. Sujkowski & Son Funeral Home. Mass will begin at 10:30 a.m. in St. Joseph Catholic Church in Maumee, followed by entombment with military honors at Resurrection Cemetery in Toledo.
