Effective April 17, the University of Toledo Medical Center will have new leadership as current CEO Daniel Barbee has accepted a position with Mercy Health.
Richard Swaine, who has been the chief financial officer at UTMC, the former Medical College of Ohio hospital, since March 2019, will take over as CEO on April 17.
Mr. Barbee will begin a new position as president of the Mercy Health-Toledo rural market, where he will be responsible for “the strategic leadership, growth, and operational oversight” of that market, which includes Mercy Health’s community hospitals in Tiffin, Willard, and Defiance.
Mr. Barbee has led the hospital since 2016. Prior to serving as CEO, he served as the hospital’s chief operating officer and vice president of clinical services.
In a news release, UT president Sharon Gaber said Mr. Swaine will provide “stable leadership amid the ongoing planning efforts under way to set a path forward for UTMC.”
“I am confident that with the support of our outstanding physicians and hospital staff, our hospital is well positioned to weather this current global pandemic and future changes,” she wrote.
Mr. Swaine joined UTMC from Beaumont Health System in Southfield, Mich. in 2019. He had served as senior vice president and hospital president at Beaumont.
In a statement, Mercy Health-Toledo President Bob Baxter said his team is “excited to welcome” Mr. Barbee.
“His vast experience and knowledge of our community will be an asset as Mercy Health continues to deliver on our promise of making health care easier for those we serve,” he said.
