The University of Toledo has brought back a former CEO to lead the UT Medical Center after announcing Thursday it was “making a change in leadership” at the hospital.
In a statement Friday, UT officials said “Rick Swaine is no longer serving as the chief executive officer of the University of Toledo Medical Center. Dan Barbee, who previously led UTMC from 2016 to 2020, has returned to serve as CEO effective Friday.”
University officials had no further comment on the circumstances behind the change. Mr. Swaine joined UTMC in 2019 as chief financial officer and was named CEO in 2020.
Mr. Barbee left the job at CEO of UTMC in 2020 to serve as president of rural market for Bon Secours Mercy Health. He also served as interim president of Mercy Health St. Anne Hospital.
“[Mr. Barbee] has a long relationship with UToledo going back to 2011 and his leadership experience in healthcare, and at UTMC specifically, will be an asset during this period of transition,” UT Interim President Matt Schroeder said.
A national search is under way for an executive vice president for health affairs that will lead the university’s clinical enterprise.
Mr. Barbee “is providing short-term leadership during this period of transition,” UT officials said. He will be paid $16,538 every two weeks, or $429,988 annually. Mr. Swaine was paid $432,973.
Prior to serving as CEO, Mr. Barbee was UTMC’s vice president of clinical services and chief operating officer. He joined the medical center in 2011 as chief nursing officer and associate executive director.
