Holy Assumption Orthodox Church in Marblehead is receiving a state historical marker, and a dedication ceremony will take place on Saturday.
The Ottawa County Historical Society will recognize the church as the oldest existing Orthodox church in Ohio, as well as the role of immigrants in developing Ottawa County.
The parish was established on March 20, 1898, and construction of the current church building began in 1905. It consisted primarily of Carpatho-Russian immigrants from present-day Slovakia and Moravia, who settled on the peninsula and worked in stone quarries and farms. Tsar Nicholas II of Russia sent the congregation four icons, a chalice, and today’s equivalent of more than $40,000 to establish the church.
Saturday’s dedication will be at 2:30 p.m. outside the church, 110 E. Main St., Marblehead. Afterward, all are invited to an open house, refreshments, and a short vespers service.
