COLUMBUS — Officials are warning Ohio residents about a phone scam that involves callers posing as state health department staff. The scam uses “caller ID spoofing technology” to make it appears calls are from credible numbers like the Ohio Health Department and at least one local department, according to a news release.
Some callers have also received scam calls from people posing as the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, a hospital or other health-care providers.
Scam callers may have some personal information about those they are targeting, including name, date of birth, address, or the name of a person’s physician.
The Ohio Department of Health warned to never give out personal information like account numbers and Social Security numbers in response to unexpected or suspicious calls.
