Recycling fines not fair to homeowners

Recycling fines not fair to homeowners

A June 30 editorial said that people who place items not intended to be recycled into the blue bin should be fined (‘‘Time to fine recycling trashers”).

On one occasion, I opened my bin and discovered that someone had placed a large amount of dirty diapers inside. On another occasion, I found a toilet inside.

When the bin is placed in the street, the homeowner has no control over what may be placed inside. I do not want to be fined for something I did not do.

Where has entitlement come from?

I find it so sad that individuals believe that they are entitled to everything because this is America.

What happened to earning what you wanted or needed? I believe the term pursuit means just that. I still can’t remember when legal and illegal became a homograph. I have heard it’s cheaper to receive benefits from the taxpayers than to earn them. It goes back to the old saying: “Why buy the cow when you get the milk for free?”

Coming together for good of U.S.

The temperature of political dialogue and debate is high. Facebook posts feature one-sided rants. This is contrary to the dialogue of times past, when neighbors and friends would openly talk politics in a context of cordiality.

The tragedy of a shooting of a Congressman near Washington last month brought to light a little-known event — D.C. politicians of all stripes gather each year for a fun baseball game for the benefit of a charity.

Local politicos can take a cue from this national event. A worthy, local event could be launched with a theme of unity for the good of a local charity. Toledo-area politicians, county party leaders, precinct committeemen, Democrats and Republicans could gather together for one day on a common theme.

Such an event could give us a reminder of a gentler, kinder time from the past.

Twitter feuds don’t help nation

It seems like President Trump has a new enemy to tweet about every day. Then come the inevitable arguments for and against these spats.

What gets lost is how does this help the economy, how many jobs has this created, and how does this make us safer?

Criteria for hiring don’t add up

The July 6 Readers’ Forum writer wants someone who is “young, smart, cheap, and able to do a good job” for finance director (“Finance department needs new direction”).

Somehow I don’t think all four attributes go together.
