Editorial: Local politicians fail to grab cash for rail links

The money to bring rail connections to Toledo was, and perhaps is, on the table. Yet our local leaders have done nothing to bring that money home.

Send them home. Send home politicians who fail Toledo and Lucas County repeatedly. The next city and county elections must envisage change.

If the ridiculous failure of our local political leadership couldn’t be more obvious, the loss of billions of potential rail funding ought finally to get the message home. They didn’t push the governor on this issue and thus the possibilities for funding languished.

The reality is stomach-churning. The needs are obvious. The money is sitting there for the taking. Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D., Toledo) pleads for action to grab our fair share. The result — nothing. Let the billions go elsewhere. Give up the hope that Toledo might have rail connections to Columbus and other cities and towns.

That our local officials have failed to move in the past few weeks remains astounding. That those leaders think they can get away with it despite repercussions from voters also is astounding.

Yet they’re right.

They can get re-elected despite continuing a path of failure and incompetence. No other explanation than pure incompetence makes sense. Arrogance is part of the mixture. The local politicians know they’ll win again.

The truth is that the fault primarily resides on voters who continue to elect candidates to office who fail on every score. If this doesn’t change, nothing will improve in Toledo or northwestern Ohio.

Until voters send the politicians home, there is little hope for change.

Toledo and Lucas County desperately need a house cleaning and this fiasco is the perfect example. You don’t need a governor to apply for the money.

Leaving billions on the table makes no sense. Don’t let them tell you otherwise. Look at the billions lost and rethink your votes next time.

Voters should be in charge. They need to take charge or get more of the same.

Good-bye, millions, billions.

Hello, the same old failed Toledo and Lucas County “leadership”.

What a shame.
