To the editor: No surprise in TPS story

The Blade’s story ( “Durant suspended in data scandal”, Jan. 25) about Toledo Public Schools Superintendent Romules Durant and the two other TPS administrators, James Gault and Brian Murphy being sanctioned with a 90-day suspension by the State Department of Education is no surprise. These three “leaders and educators” have obviously been on suspension for years based upon the TPS state academic score card results over the past six years. What is a surprise to me is the fact that the members of the Toledo Board of Education are going to continue to pay these well-compensated administrators and continue their benefit package as well during the entire term of the 90-day suspension. Some penalty!

I sure hope some student who gets suspended for cheating on an exam raises the Romules Durant defense of “how about letting me stay in school and purge my record after you give me an A for trying.”

Left-wing letters

Whenever anyone asks where I get my news I generally say that my main source is the Blade. The reason is the balance provided by your coverage. You do not give President Trump a free pass by any means, but you don’t seem to take the default position of “Mr. Trump is bad, and we must find the angle that makes him look the worst” that so many other media outlets base their reporting on.

Sadly, I see that changing. Slowly, perhaps, but definitely. While your reporting seems to have only taken a subtle shift left, the letters to the editor that you have been publishing of late have been egregiously, aggressively, and in some cases nearly obscenely anti-Trump. And they seem to outnumber the letters that are neutral or pro-Trump by a large margin.

I’ve noticed this but haven’t spoken out until today, when you published a letter that called President Trump every name in the book. The author admitted he needed a dictionary to come up with the insulting words to use against the President. Without backing up any of it, he called the President misogynist, a bully, deceitful, and many others.

Funnily enough, I thought a lot of the words he used would have been an apt description of President Trump’s predecessor, but I would never have wasted my time penning a letter that called him all those things. I do not believe that The Blade would have ever run a letter calling Mr. Obama “neurotic, charlatan, demagogue” etc. So why publish such unfounded invective against President Trump? Toledo is and has been a one-party town, that is no secret. Have you finally traded in your journalistic integrity, which many of us truly appreciated, and jumped on the hysterical anti-Trump bandwagon to placate the left-wing masses in northwest Ohio? Whatever the reason, it is a shame and I hope The Blade finds its backbone and returns to balanced political reporting soon.
