To the editor: Ask Native American fans about new team name

As a diehard Cleveland Indians fan, I too was unmoved by the name change pick of Guardians. Like Tom Walton (“Cleveland’s ‘statues’ of limitations,” Sunday) I was hoping for Spiders.

What made me scratch my head was his instance that the name Indians was not "dishonorable." Perhaps he has missed that for decades native groups have called for the name to be changed?

Instead of asking mayoral candidates how they feel about the name change, how about asking local native peoples? I bet he would get a very different answer.

Climate change questions

Thoughts to ponder when considering climate change:

In our battle against climate change is it wise to promote green power sources at the total exclusion of hydrocarbons and nuclear? Would not diversity of sources be better since the reliability of wind, water, and solar is subject to changes in climate? For example the hydroelectric power provided by the Hoover Dam power grid is currently endangered by the droughts in the West.

With the proper investment of money and modern technology, cannot coal and gas-fired power plants be rendered nearly pollution free, at a cost comparable to what it costs to develop and maintain green power sources?

What impact will the advent of all electric vehicles have on the existing power grid? Will additional power plants be required and can green power sources meet the demand?

What might be the environmental impact of the manufacture and eventual disposal of millions of vehicle batteries?

And finally, in as much as various strategies over the past few decades to control pollution as a means of limiting climate change have proven a failure as witnessed by the current state of affairs, should we not be spending more time time, effort, and and money in developing strategies to deal with the inevitable?

Divisive cartoon

I was totally disgusted by the July 22 political cartoon. Here we are with another large increase in the number of deaths from coronavirus and the cartoonist is maligning Dr. Anthony Fauci, the one person who can be trusted to guide us through. Dr. Fauci understands the continuous changes that are evolving and what that means to us.

We knew nothing about it when the pandemic started. Dr. Fauci has kept us up to date on how best to protect ourselves as it has evolved. This is how science works when a new virus or germ occurs. There is still more to learn as it continues to evolve.

On the whole I do not like this cartoonist, he obviously wants to continue to divide our nation instead of heal it. I wish you would change cartoonists. They are suppose to make you grin or laugh not anger you. It’s a cartoon. This one only divided.
