To the editor: Ohio needs bold leadership; that’s why I’m for Ramaswamy

As a son of northwest Ohio, I have always believed in the values that define our way of life — faith, hard work, and integrity. These principles shape who we are, guide how we build our future, and drive our contributions to something greater than ourselves. They have sustained us for generations, making our region a place where families put down roots, businesses grow, and communities thrive.

But in recent decades, something has changed. Despite our strong values and rich heritage, too many young people are leaving in search of better opportunities elsewhere. Families watch their children and grandchildren move to other states, drawn by better jobs, lower taxes, and the promise of a brighter future. That is unacceptable. Ohio should not be a place people leave — it should be a destination.

Throughout my 10 years of service in the Ohio General Assembly, I have been proud to help reverse this trend. My Republican colleagues and I have cut taxes, eliminated burdensome regulations, and cultivated a pro-business environment that attracts investment and creates jobs. Thanks to these efforts, Ohio has become one of the best states in the Midwest for business and innovation. But while leading the Midwest is commendable, we should not settle. Ohio has the talent, resources, and grit to be the best state in the nation. To achieve that, we need bold leadership — leadership committed to taking Ohio to the next level.

That’s why I am proud to endorse Vivek Ramaswamy for governor.

Ohio was once the backbone of American industry, setting the standard for economic growth and innovation nationwide. A century ago, Toledo was the global leader in glass production, experiencing one of the fastest industrial expansions in the country. Cities across Ohio followed suit, fueling industrial booms that set the pace for the rest of the nation. There is no reason we cannot reclaim that mantle of leadership in the 21st century.

But this won’t happen by accident — it requires a governor who will push Ohio to new heights. Vivek’s vision for our state is not just about competing; it’s about setting the standard for excellence. He understands that real success means not merely protecting the progress we’ve made but accelerating it with fresh perspectives and the courage to challenge the status quo.

Beyond our shared commitment to restoring Ohio’s standing as a national leader, Vivek and I share something even more personal — we’re both fathers of young children. When I met with him recently at his home, one of his sons climbed onto his knee during our conversation, just wanting to be close to his dad. In that moment, I saw more than just a father and son — I saw the deeper reason Vivek is running for governor. He knows that every decision made today will define the future our children inherit. That responsibility isn’t abstract; for Vivek, this fight is personal. He isn’t running for the title. As a successful entrepreneur, he doesn’t need to subject himself to the harsh business of politics. He’s running because he knows what’s at stake.

Failure is simply not an option. That’s why I have no doubt he will fight relentlessly to make Ohio the best place to live, work, and raise a family.

The next chapter in Ohio’s story will not be written by those afraid to challenge the status quo. It will be written by leaders who dare to push the boundaries of what’s possible. Mr. Ramaswamy is that leader, and I am honored to stand with him as he fights to build a stronger, more prosperous Ohio for us all.

Rob McColley (R., Napoleon) is president of the Ohio Senate.
