ROCHESTER, Minn. — Down just six points heading into the final 10 minutes, Owens was unable to get a rally started and fell to Onondaga 88-68 in the first round of the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III women’s tournament on Wednesday at the Rochester Regional Sports Center.
The Express (18-13) had a cold night from the floor, going 22 of 60 and a meddling 3 of 17 from behind the three-point line. In contrast, the Lazers (25-6) were 40.5 percent from the field and knocked down 13 of their 37 3-pointers.
Onondaga’s Brianna Weaver was responsible for almost half of those, going 6 of 13 from beyond the arc and finishing with a 22 points. Kathryn Grainger led all scorers as she poured in 26 points for the Lazers.
Owens was paced by freshman forward Emma Saylor’s 15-point, nine-rebound performance. Liv Mullins finished with a 13-point, 13-rebound double-double. Myuana Bullock also had 13 points. Springfield graduate A'Leah Hodges scored 10 points.
While their aspirations to win a national title have come to an end, the Express’ season is not yet over. Owens will play Community College of Rhode Island back in Rochester at 11 a.m. Friday.
