BGSU won’t accept postseason tournament invite

BOWLING GREEN — One day after saying the Bowling Green State University men’s basketball team would accept a postseason bid, coach Michael Huger and the Falcons had a change of heart.

In a statement released on Twitter on Sunday night, Huger said: “Following a day of reflection since the MAC championship game, our team has made the decision to not play in a postseason tournament this year.”

The announcement came one day after BGSU played in the Mid-American Conference tournament championship game, falling in a close game with nationally ranked Buffalo. The Falcons played in the MAC title game for the first time since 2002.

After being picked last in the MAC preseason poll, the Falcons (22-12 overall) went 12-6 in league play.

They were one win away from their first NCAA tournament berth since 1968.

“As a team, we are proud of the many accomplishments we reached during the 2018-19 season,” Huger said in the statement. “While the outside expectations were low for our team coming into the season, we always had high internal expectations. We met some of our goals with a 22-win season, a 14-2 record in the Stroh Center, a 10-game winning streak, 12 conference wins in one of the toughest leagues in the country, and a trip to the MAC Championship game.

“We would like to thank our fans for the tremendous love and support throughout the season.”
