Bowling Green starting QB Doege enters transfer portal

BOWLING GREEN — Starting quarterback Jarret Doege has entered the NCAA transfer portal, Bowling Green confirmed Wednesday.

247Sports first reported Doege’s decision.

Doege made 17 starts the past two years and was in line to be the Falcons’ quarterback again next season, Bowling Green’s first since hiring coach Scot Loeffler.

He led the Mid-American Conference with 27 touchdown passes during the regular season and completed more than 62 percent of his passes for 2,660 yards. He had 12 interceptions on 389 attempts last season.

Doege was part of former Bowling Green coach Mike Jinks’ first full recruiting class at the school. The Falcons were the lone Football Bowl Subdivision school to offer a scholarship to Doege, though he won the starting role by the end of his first season on campus.

After starting the 2018 season 1-6, however, Bowling Green fired Jinks and eventually hired Loeffler after the season. Most of the previous staff — including Doege’s older brother, Seth, who had been an assistant under Jinks — was not retained.

The younger Doege still completed spring football as well as the rest of the school year at Bowling Green, but he opted to explore his options this summer.

For the time being, Doege’s decision leaves Bowling Green with three quarterbacks on the roster. Bryce Veasley and Grant Strock both redshirted last season, their first years on campus, while redshirt junior Grant Loy played in 11 games last season as a change-of-pace option behind Doege, who primarily ran the ball.

Doege, if granted immediate eligibility at another university by the NCAA, would have two years of eligibility remaining.

He becomes the third starter from last season’s team to transfer, joining defensive linemen Josh Croslen and Kyle Junior. Junior has since enrolled at Oklahoma State.

Bowling Green will begin the season Aug. 29 against Morgan State.
