BOWLING GREEN — After a 5-0 victory over Lake Superior State on Friday, the Bowling Green State University hockey team fell 3-1 to the Lakers in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association matchup on Saturday at the Slater Family Ice Arena.
Friday’s contest featured strong first and third periods from BGSU (8-5-0, 5-3-0 WCHA), bookending the game with a pair of goals in each period.
Lake Superior State (5-11-0, 3-5-0) offered more resistance to the Falcons attack on Saturday.
A goal-free first period saw the Lakers match up well with the Falcons. Lake Superior State fired as many shots on goal (nine) as Bowling Green had total shots. BGSU rifled five shots on goal in the period while committing four penalties. The Lakers failed to convert on three power-play opportunities in the period.
The teams exchanged power-play goals in the second period. LSSU’s Pete Veillette scored his fourth on the year just after the midpoint of the period. Veillette was assisted by Hampus Eriksson. BGSU’s Taylor Schneider was penalized for slashing one minute prior to the goal.
The Falcons responded less than one minute into a power play after LSSU’s goal. The Lakers’ Will Riedell was assessed a penalty for slashing, and 24 seconds later, BG’s Connor Ford buried his seventh goal of the season into the net to equalize the game at 1. Ford was assisted by Alex Barber and Brandon Kruse.
Lake Superior State broke the tie in the third period with another power-play goal, as BGSU’s Sam Craggs was whistled for roughing. Sixteen seconds later, Alex Ambrosio scored his third goal of the season to give the Lakers a 2-1 lead.
Lake Superior State added an empty-net goal with 12.6 seconds remaining. Max Humitz scored his eighth of the season unassisted.
