BOWLING GREEN — The Bowling Green State University hockey team held a distinct advantage in shots on goal throughout the course of Saturday's game against Mercyhurst at Slater Family Ice Arena.
The Falcons, however, struggled to score, allowing Mercyhurst to escape with a 2-1 victory.
Bowling Green (3-1-0) lost for the first time this season despite a 39-13 advantage in shots.
Mercyhurst (1-0-0) got on the board first with an opening-period goal by Justin Cmunt on the power play that was assisted by Steven Ipri and Austin Heidemann. That was the lone goal in the first period as BGSU held an 8-7 advantage in shots on net.
The Falcons came out firing in the second period with 21 shots compared to just two from Mercyhurst. Neither team scored in the period, however, and Mercyhurst took a 1-0 lead into the third period.
In the third, Cade Townsend added an early power-play goal on an assist from Josh McDougall to give Mercyhurst a 2-0 lead.
Bowling Green was able to answer when Evan Dougherty scored late in the third period on assists from Gavin Gould and T.J. Lloyd, but it was too little, too late for the Falcons.
Mercyhurst converted twice on four power plays, while Bowing Green could not take advantage of any of its seven power plays.
