BOWLING GREEN — The Bowling Green State University hockey team lost 5-2 to Lake Superior State on Saturday night for the Falcons’ fourth loss in a row.
The Falcons (16-8) were swept in a weekend series at Minnesota State last week and fell twice at home to Lake Superior State the past two nights. The Lakers edged Bowling Green 2-1 in overtime on Friday night.
Three second-period goals broke the game open for Lake Superior State after the Lakers took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
Lake Superior State scored with just more than a minute remaining in the opening period when Hampus Eriksson put home an even strength goal on assists from Miroslav Mucha and Jacob Bengtsson.
In the second period, the Lakers struck three times with even-strength goals from Pete Veillette, Louis Boudon, and Ashton Calder to jump out to a 4-0 advantage.
Bowling Green broke through with a goal three minutes into the third period from Cameron Wright on an assist from Adam Pitters.
Lake Superior State’s Dustin Manz answered with a goal to stretch the lead back out to 5-1 before Wright scored his second goal of the game less than a minute later to cut the Lakers’ lead to 5-2.
Bowling Green held a 30-24 advantage in shots on goal throughout the game, but Lake Superior State goaltender Mareks Mitens saved 28 of those 30 shots.
Falcons goaltender Eric Dop made 19 saves.
