MANKATO, Minn. — Minnesota State’s three first-period goals were a sign of more things to come as Bowling Green eventually fell 9-2 to the host Mavericks on Friday.
Sam Craggs and Coale Norris each scored for BGSU (5-2-2).
The Falcons faced the 3-0 deficit in just 9:51 of game time.
Minnesota State’s Cade Borchardt, who had a hat trick, scored a power play goal 1:30 in, assisted by Akito Hirose and Reggie Lutz.
Sam Morton added a goal for the Mavericks at the 6:12 mark, assisted by Benton Maass and Andy Carroll, before Borchardt added his second goal 3:39 later, assisted by Nathan Smith and Julian Napravnik.
The Falcons finally got on the board in the second period as Craggs scored a power play goal, his second of the season. Chrystopher Collin and Brayden Krieger earned assists.
However, 30 seconds later, Borchardt finished his hat trick in the second period at the 8:40 mark, assisted by Smith and Carroll.
BGSU’s Gabriel Chicoine and Austen Swankler assisted on Norris’ goal, which came 3:26 into the third period.
Ryan Sandelin scored twice for the Mavericks, and Jake Livingston, Smith, and David Silye also scored.
Minnesota State nearly doubled Bowling Green in total shots at 70-37, producing a 36-21 edge in shots on target.
In goal for BGSU, Zach Rose allowed seven goals against 20 shots and Christian Stoever allowed two goals against seven shots.
Defensively for BGSU, Spencer Schneider and Anton Malmstrom each blocked three shots.
Taylor Schneider went 7-of-8 in faceoffs for the Falcons.
Bowling Green will try again against Minnesota State at 7:07 p.m. Saturday in Mankato, Minn.
