ANNAPOLIS — The Bowling Green State University women’s basketball team gave Liberty a challenge on Sunday in the Navy Classic before losing to the Flames 76-72.
Despite losing its fourth straight game, Bowling Green (1-4) came out of the two-day tournament with a couple of close results. George Mason beat the Falcons 77-75 in overtime Saturday.
Liberty (5-1), which led 45-35 at halftime, produced the 500th career win for head coach Carey Green.
Bowling Green outscored the Flames 19-12 in the third quarter, taking the lead with 8:38 to go in the game on a putback by Kenzie Lewis.
BG built its lead to four with 5:33 to go before Liberty went on an 11-0 run in a span of 2 minutes, 18 seconds, to take control for good.
Elissa Brett led Bowling Green with 17 points on 6-of-13 shooting. Jocelyn Tate put in 15 points, and Morgan Sharps added 12 points.
Five players scored 10 or more points for Liberty, led by Mya Berkman with 17. Dee Brown and Kennedi WIlliams both had 11 and Bridgette Rettstatt and Priscilla Smeenge each had 10.
For the game, Liberty out-rebounded Bowling Green 44-20, including 17-4 on the offensive boards. Liberty also had a 54-28 advantage in points in the paint and an 18-4 edge in second-chance points.
Bowling Green hosts Valparaiso on Sunday, Dec. 5, in a 2 p.m. contest at the Stroh Center.
