Here are updates from Wednesday’s college football game between Bowling Green and Kent State. This story will be updated following each quarter.
FOURTH QUARTER
Two plays into the fourth quarter, Matt McDonald was hit dropping back and intercepted by linebacker CJ Harris. Collin Schlee turned the turnover into a 26-yard touchdown throw to wide receiver Devontez Walker. Bowling Green turned the ball over on downs on its next drive, and Andrew Glass hit a 27-yard field goal to put the Golden Flashes up 33-6. Junior quarterback Camden Orth threw a pick-six on the Falcons’ next drive to stretch Kent State’s lead to 40-6.
THIRD QUARTER
An initially successful Kent State opening drive ended in a turnover on downs when junior inside linebacker JB Brown and sophomore defensive lineman Billie Roberts blew up a fourth-and-four run from Marquez Cooper. Bowling Green was unable to capitalize once again as a fake punt after a running-into-the-kicker penalty ended in disaster, with the Falcons yielding possession to the Golden Flashes at midfield. Andrew Glass kicked a 26-yard field goal to put Kent State up 23-0.
The Falcons responded with their first points of the game, a bobbled crossing route from senior quarterback Matt McDonald to junior wide receiver Tyrone Broden that Broden turned into a 24-yard touchdown. Bowling Green’s defense rose to the occasion with another stop, with senior defensive lineman Karl Brooks halting Cooper on fourth-and-four.
SECOND QUARTER
Collin Schlee opened the second quarter by finding wide-open running back Bryan Bradford for a 14-yard touchdown. The Falcons responded by using a methodical drive to penetrate deep into Golden Flashes territory, but defensive lineman Sekou Diaby blew up a promising pitchout to sophomore running back Jaison Patterson. With the help of a pass interference call on Deshawn Jones Jr., Kent State drove to a four-yard Schlee rushing touchdown to double their lead.
Bowling Green benefited from an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on its next drive but wound up having to punt; freshman Sami Sir’s kick went just seven yards as the Golden Flashes took over in plus territory. Schlee hit wide receiver Ja’Shaun Poke for a 21-yard touchdown to put Kent State up 20-0.
FIRST QUARTER
Kent State won the coin toss and opted to defer its choice to the second half. The Golden Flashes, however, immediately took possession after Bowling Green bungled the opening kickoff. Kent State kicker Andrew Glass missed a 37-yard field goal attempt to conclude the Golden Flashes’ opening drive. The Falcons picked up a first down on their opening drive but failed on fourth-and-four from the Kent State 48.
The Golden Flashes drove into Bowling Green’s red zone but quarterback Collin Schlee couldn’t hit wide receiver Dante Cephas on fourth-and-seven, with sophomore cornerback Deshawn Jones Jr. providing strong coverage. The Falcons couldn’t take advantage of the stop, going three-and-out and punting. Kent State’s next drive ended in a deflected interception by senior inside linebacker DJ Taylor, but Bowling Green couldn’t capitalize, failing again on fourth down at midfield.
