Bowling Green football to play in Quick Lane Bowl

BOWLING GREEN — For the first time since 2015, Bowling Green State University is going bowling.

The Falcons will face New Mexico State in the Quick Lane Bowl at 2:30 p.m. on Dec. 26th at Ford Field. The Quick Lane Bowl will be aired on ESPN.

"Our players and staff cannot be more excited to play in the 2022 Quick Lane Bowl," coach Scot Loeffler said in a press release. "It is a tremendous opportunity to play in Detroit, which is in our recruiting footprint. We are starting to prepare for a great New Mexico State program that finished the season winning four of five games. It will be an exciting game for both programs. I am looking forward to our great BGSU fans filling Ford Field to cheer us on as we go for our seventh win. Go Falcons!"

Bowling Green (6-6, 5-3) last appeared in a bowl game in a 58-27 loss to Georgia Southern in the GoDaddy Bowl on Dec. 23, 2015. The Falcons' last bowl victory came in 2014 with a 33-28 defeat of South Alabama in the Camellia Bowl.

Bowling Green is making its 14th bowl appearance. New Mexico State, making its first bowl appearance since 2017, is 3-0-1 in bowl games. The Quick Lane Bowl marks the first meeting between the Falcons and the Aggies (6-6).

New Mexico State, which currently operates as an FBS independent, is transitioning to Conference USA next fall. The Aggies have won four of its last five games including the last two of their regular season.

Aggies coach Jerry Kill was hired in November 2021. Kill has made stops at the NCAA Division II, FCS, and FBS levels, including at fellow Mid American Conference program Northern Illinois. He led the Huskies for three seasons (2008-2010).

“It’s kind of been a unique ride as a first year head coach and expectations and kind of the rollercoaster ride we’ve been on,” Kill said to reporters on Sunday, “but we’re certainly thankful for the opportunity to go to Detroit.”

Bowling Green is making its first appearance in the Quick Lane Bowl. The Falcons have played two bowl games at Ford Field, in 2003 in the defunct Motor City Bowl and 2013 when it changed its name to the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl. Bowling Green is 1-1 at bowl games at Ford Field.

Tickets for the bowl game will go on sale for Bowling Green’s designated section at noon on Monday.
