BOWLING GREEN — Former Memphis women’s basketball player Jamirah Shutes, who was charged with assault following an incident in the handshake line after a game vs. Bowling Green State University, appeared in Bowling Green Municipal Court on Monday morning.
Shutes, who had previously entered a not guilty plea, was charged after an incident report stated she punched then-Falcons senior Elissa Brett after a Women’s National Invitation Tournament game March 23 at the Stroh Center. On Monday, a judge set her bail on an own recognizance bond.
Shutes was ordered to not have contact with Brett, and she cannot threaten or attempt to cause harm to any other person or property.
The next court date for Shutes was scheduled for May 22.
Following BGSU’s 73-60 win over Memphis, Shutes stopped in the handshake line to talk to Brett. After a brief moment, Brett started to walk away and appeared to be struck by Shutes.
Brett fell to the floor and was immediately attended to by BGSU players and coaches. She was down for a couple of minutes before getting up and walking back to the locker room with the team.
Shutes was a fifth-year senior for Memphis. Brett recently announced her commitment to Michigan as a graduate transfer for her fifth and final season.
