BOWLING GREEN — A 3-0 deficit in the first period was too much to overcome for Bowling Green State University hockey, which lost 4-1 to St. Thomas on Friday at the Slater Family Ice Arena in the Falcons’ first Central Collegiate Hockey Association matchup of the season.
BGSU lost by 3 despite a 43-23 advantage in shots on goal.
The visiting Tommies got a power-play goal from Liam Malmquist and an even-strength strike from Cooper Gay to lead 2-0 with 7:46 left in the first period. A crucial blow came with 2:58 remaining in the period when Malmquist got a short-handed goal to put the Falcons down 3.
The Bowling Green power play unit responded with Jaden Grant scoring on the man advantage in the first minute of the second period. That was the only time the Falcons could beat goaltender Aaron Trotter, who made 42 saves on 43 attempts.
The Tommies scored into an empty net with 2:59 left in the game to restore their three-goal lead. BG goalie Christian Stoever made 19 saves on 22 shots.
Bowling Green (2-7, 0-1 CCHA) will finish the two-game weekend set with St. Thomas (5-5-1, 3-2) on Saturday. Puck drop is set for 7:07 p.m.
