MONTREAL — Marcus Hill and Jason Spurgin came up with key plays late to lift Bowling Green’s men’s basketball team to a 77-73 victory Sunday over Canisius on the closing day of the Northern Classic.
Hill, who led the Falcons with 26 points, scored on a layup with 15 seconds remaining that gave Bowling Green the lead again after Canisius had rallied from a nine-point deficit to tie the score.
"Marcus [Hill] has done such a great job getting to the rack,” Bowling Green coach Todd Simon said. “We just wanted to move the chess pieces and give him a lane. Marcus is crafty in there, if you give him just enough room he's going to find a way to get the ball in the basket, and he did."
Spurgin then came up with a denial on the other end with five seconds to go and followed with a pair of free throws, preserving the victory for the Falcons (4-3). He finished with 17 points, tying a career high, and had seven rebounds.
Frank Mitchell paced Canisius (4-3) with 19 points.
Bowling Green went 2-1 in Montreal, losing 72-65 to Western Kentucky on Friday and defeating Lipscomb 82-61 on Saturday. The Falcons travel to Southern Indiana for a 4 p.m. contest Saturday, with the next home game Dec. 10 against Ohio Dominican.
