BGSU hockey overwhelmed by Ohio State in 6-2 loss

COLUMBUS — Things seemed to be going well for Bowling Green State University’s hockey team early on as it held a 1-0 lead after the first period.

However, four second-period goals by Ohio State propelled the Buckeyes to a 6-2 win over the Falcons at Value City Arena on Friday night.

BGSU dropped to 7-14 on the season, while Ohio State moved to 7-8-4.

The Falcons led 1-0 at the end of the first period thanks to Ben Wozney’s goal assisted by Ryan O’Hara and Eric Parker with 3:16 left in the period. It was just the second goal of the season for Wozney.

The host Buckeyes took control in the second period. Just 1:02 into the frame, Ohio State’s Riley Hughes scored to even the game at 1-1.

Scooter Brickey recorded the next two Buckeye goals, both assisted by a combination of Stephen Halliday and Theo Wallberg.

Brickey found the back of the net on a power play, giving Ohio State a 2-1 lead with 4:49 left in the second period. He also scored with just 31 seconds remaining.

The Buckeyes were able to add a short-handed goal at the second-period horn, a shot by Dalton Messina that put them ahead 4-1 going into the third.

The Falcons got back on the board in the third period, but it turned out to be moot as the Buckeyes recorded a pair of power-play goals before all was said and done.

Quinn Emerson second goal of the season for BGSU, assisted by Parker and Jaden Grant, sliced the Ohio State lead in half (4-2) 2:30 into the period.

The Buckeyes closed out the scoring with power-play goals from Cam Thiesing and Thomas Weis.

Ohio State outshot Bowling Green 41 to 25 overall. In net, the Falcons’ Cole Moore made 35 saves but allowed all six goals. Ohio State goaltender Kristoffer Eberly stopped 23 shots.

The two teams will meet again on Saturday at Slater Family Ice Arena in Bowling Green. Puck drop is at 7:07 p.m.
