BOWLING GREEN — Bowling Green State University hockey took a brief lead in the third period Saturday night, but still ended up on the wrong end of a 3-1 final against Michigan Tech at the Slater Family Ice Arena.
The Falcons lost both games of the weekend series to the Huskies, suffering a two-game sweep for the first time since Jan. 5-6 against Ohio State. BG (13-18-1, 11-10-1-2 Central Collegiate Hockey Association) had entered the Michigan Tech games without a loss since Jan. 20.
On a night when BGSU honored its 1983-84 national championship-winning team and celebrated Senior Night, the action on the ice was goalless for more than two periods. The Huskies outshot the Falcons 11-8 in the first period and 13-6 in the second, but BG goaltender Cole Moore came up with 24 saves across the 40 minutes.
Seth Fyten broke the deadlock with 17:06 remaining in the third, beating Michigan Tech goalie Blake Pietila with an assist from Tommy Pasanen. It was the Falcons’ first goal of the weekend after a 7-0 defeat on Friday.
The Bowling Green advantage lasted less than three minutes. Evan Orr scored the tying goal for the Huskies, and with under 10 minutes to play, Chase Pietila gave Michigan Tech the lead.
After the Falcons pulled Moore to make one final push, another Pietila, Logan Pietila, deposited an empty-net goal for the Huskies.
Blake Pietila only needed to make 18 saves to Moore’s 32 as Michigan Tech (14-3-6, 11-9-2) enjoyed a significant shot advantage.
Bowling Green will travel to Marquette, Mich., next weekend to face Northern Michigan in its final regular-season series. Friday’s puck drop is set for 7:07 p.m.
