ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Bowling Green State University hockey team picked up its second overtime win of the season thanks to Gustav Stjernberg’s extra-session goal, winning 2-1 over Rochester Institute of Technology in a game played at the Gene Polisseni Center on Saturday.
Stjernberg’s goal in overtime was his first of the season. Ben Doran contributed the assist, his second of the season.
Outside of overtime, the rest of the scoring came in the second period as each team scored. RIT got on the board first by way of Simon Isabelle at 14:43 of the middle period.
The Falcons, however, knotted it up via a power play less than two minutes later. Dalton Norris found the back of the net assisted by Ryan O’Hara and Adam Zink.
That margin held for the remainder of regulation. Around the midpoint of the third period, the Falcons’ penalty kill shut down a power play by Rochester, keeping the game tied at 1.
BGSU stopped all three of RIT’s power-play tries while going 1 for 4 themselves. The Falcons also held an advantage in shots on goal, 45-27. Falcon goalie Cole Moore made 26 saves.
Bowling Green next faces Ohio State in a home-and-home series on Friday and Saturday. The Falcons are in Columbus Friday night at 7:07 p.m., then host the Buckeyes on Saturday with puck drop at 7:37 p.m.
