BGSU men come up short against Weber State in Arizona Tip-Off tournament

TEMPE, Ariz. — Bowling Green State University men’s basketball lost the lead for good in the final minute and came up short on Marcus Johnson’s go-ahead 3-point attempt on one of its final possessions, falling 73-70 to Weber State in the Arizona Tip-Off tournament Friday.

It was the Falcons’ third loss in four games, dropping them to 2-5 on the young season.

Javontae Campbell split a pair of free throws for the Falcons with 48 seconds remaining, giving them a 70-69 advantage. But Weber State responded 20 seconds later on Miguel Tomley’s layup to put the Wildcats up by one.

After a total of three timeouts called (two by BGSU, one by Weber State), the Falcons got it to Johnson, whose 3-point attempt fell short with six seconds left, and Blaise Threatt grabbed the defensive rebound for the Wildcats. Threatt went on to knock down a pair of free throws and Trey Thomas’ desperation 3 for Bowling Green missed the mark, giving Weber State the victory.

The Falcons maintained a 54-44 edge following Derrick Butler’s layup at the 13:58 mark, but the Wildcats proceeded to go on a 9-0 run that brought them within striking distance. BGSU held onto a slim lead from there until a Tomley 3-pointer put Weber State ahead 64-63 with 7:09 remaining.

Leading the Falcons were Butler with 16 points and five rebounds, Campbell 13 points and three rebounds, and Braelon Green 10 points and three rebounds. Threatt notched a game-high 19 points for the Wildcats (3-4).

Bowling Green takes on New Mexico State (3-3) at 2 p.m. Saturday in the third-place game of the tournament’s Desert Division.
