BOWLING GREEN — After more than 63 minutes of scoreless hockey, Augustana scored a game-winning goal in overtime to defeat Bowling Green State University 1-0 on Friday at the Slater Family Ice Arena.
Hayden Hennen scored the lone goal at the 3:23 mark of overtime as the visitors from Sioux Falls, S.D., became the first team since Michigan Tech on Nov. 29 to shut out the Falcons. That Nov. 29 game was also BGSU’s last regulation or overtime home loss until Friday.
BGSU (12-8-4, 8-5-4 Central Collegiate Hockey Association) went 0 for 4 on power plays in the loss. Augustana (14-7-2, 6-3), which out-shot BG 35-33 went 0 for 2 with an extra man.
Each team registered two shots on goal during the overtime period. Colton Friesen provided the assist for Hennen’s winning goal.
Josh Kotai earned the shutout in goal for Augustana, stopping all 33 of the Falcons’ shots. Christian Stoever made 34 stops on 35 attempts for BGSU.
The two teams will meet again at 7:07 p.m. Saturday at Slater Family Ice Arena to conclude their set of two matchups for the regular season.
