BGSU clinches home ice in CCHA quarterfinal after triumph in regular-season finale

BOWLING GREEN — Bowling Green State University hockey tallied three goals in the third period to seal a 5-3 win over Lake Superior State in the regular-season finale at Slater Family Ice Arena on Saturday.

With the victory, BGSU locked up one of the top four seeds in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association tournament and will host Michigan Tech in a best-of-3 series this Friday through Sunday at Slater.

Ahead 2-0 following a pair of second-period goals, the Falcons extended their lead with a goal off a power-play chance less than five minutes into the third. Brody Waters converted his 15th goal of the season as BGSU (16-13-4, 12-10-4 CCHA) went ahead of Lake Superior 3-0 at 4:27 of the period.

For good measure, a few minutes later BGSU registered a pair of goals only 24 seconds apart that made the difference insurmountable at 5-0.

Ryan O’Hara notched an even-strength goal at 7:22 of the period, followed by Waters’ second of the game 24 seconds later that made it a five-goal difference.

Lake Superior (12-20-2, 10-15-1) did respond with three straight goals of its own, but it was not enough.

Jacob Conrad converted a power-play opportunity at 10:36, then goals by William Ahlrik and Luke Levandowski with under four minutes remaining pulled the visitors within two.

BGSU got the scoring started in the second period. Just over 12 minutes into the middle period, Ben Wozney notched his first goal of the season, giving the Falcons a 1-0 lead.

The hosts extended their lead at 2-0 5:36 later when Ben Doran found the back of the net.

Bowling Green held a 42-27 advantage in shots on goal.
