ST. PAUL — Bowling Green State University hockey had its season cut short in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association tournament semifinals Saturday, falling 3-1 on the road at streaking St. Thomas.
BGSU, which ends the season at 18-14-4, took a 1-1 tie into the third period before the Tommies registered a pair of third-period goals to seal the victory and advance to the Mason Cup championship next weekend.
St. Thomas (19-13-5) came into Saturday’s game riding a seven-game win streak — their last loss being a 4-1 defeat at BGSU on Feb. 7 — and pushed it to eight in a row following the win over the Falcons.
Bowling Green’s Ethan Scardina converted an even-strength goal with 2:15 left in the second period that knotted the game at 1. Dalton Norris and Gustav Stjernberg registered the assists.
The Tommies grabbed the lead for good 7:47 into the third by way of Liam Malmquist’s goal, assisted by Lucas Wahlin. Bowling Green had a power play in the final minute, but instead it was St. Thomas taking advantage. Cooper Gay scored a short-handed goal for the final two-goal margin.
Malmquist notched the assist on the play.
Neither team found the back of the net in the first 20 minutes, then the Tommies took a 1-0 lead at 5:40 of the second period on Casy Laylin’s goal, assisted by Ethan Gauer and Carson Peters.
The Falcons finished the game 0 for 3 on the power play, while the Tommies were 0 for 2. BGSU held a narrow 33-30 edge in shots on goal over St. Thomas.
BGSU goalie Christian Stoever made 26 saves for the Falcons. St. Thomas’ Jake Sibell stopped 32 shots.
