MAC staying put on football postponement

BOWLING GREEN — The Mid-American Conference will not alter its original decision to postpone the football season, the conference said in a statement.

The Big Ten, which initially postponed along with the MAC, Pac-12, and Mountain West, announced Wednesday it would return to the field in October following expansions in rapid coronavirus testing available for athletes.

The MAC, however, will not play this fall despite the Big Ten’s reversal. In a brief statement, MAC commissioner Jon Steinbrecher said the league will continue with its plans to resume sports during the spring semester.

“Currently there are no plans to play a fall season in any sport,” Steinbrecher said. “We are focused on providing our fall student-athletes meaningful competitive experiences in the spring.”

The MAC is considering a number of options for the spring semester, one of which is an eight-game season that would begin in February

No proposal has been recommended or accepted by university presidents, who voted 12-0 on Aug. 8 to suspend the season until the following semester.

The MAC has yet to make a decision on winter sports.
