Jim Leyland and Jerry Glanville the two most recognized Perrysburg graduates in the sports world headline a group scheduled for induction Feb. 2 into the school s athletic hall of fame.
Leyland, a 1962 graduate, and Glanville (1959) made a name for themselves by having successful careers in professional athletics.
Patty Ferguson McLean, Deb Snow, Steve Pheasant, and Jim Derr complete the second induction class.
The class will be officially honored before the Perrysburg boys varsity basketball game against Rossford. A reception open to all attending the game will occur after the contest. Tickets for the game are $6 and can be purchased in advance.
Perrysburg athletic director Ray Pohlman said the hall of famers represent past successes before the new high school was built on Roachton Road. The high school previously was on Boundary Avenue, now the site for the junior high school.
We don t want to forget the past, Pohlman said. With the hall of fame, one of our goals is to blend the old school with the new school.
Leyland is one of major league baseball s most successful managers. In 2006, he led the Detroit Tigers to the World Series. He started his pro career by signing with the Tigers in 1963. He has also been manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Florida Marlins, and Colorado Rockies. He led the Marlins to a World Series title in 1997.
At Perrysburg, Leyland earned nine varsity letters, playing football, basketball, and baseball. He was named All-NLL quarterback.
Glanville found success as an NFL coach, most notably, serving as the head coach of the Houston Oilers and Atlanta Falcons. He led his teams to four playoff appearances. He is currently the defensive coordinator at the University of Hawaii.
Glanville was an All-NLL performer in football and was a key member of an undefeated team his senior year. He also played baseball and ran track.
McLean (1975) participated in basketball, volleyball, softball, and track. She placed second at the 1975 state track and field meet in the high jump. She played basketball at Miami (Ohio).
Snow (1980) played volleyball, basketball, and softball. She led the Yellow Jackets to the 1979 state volleyball title. She was the Perrysburg volleyball coach for 11 seasons, leading the Yellow Jackets to 6 NLL titles, 6 district titles and 2 regional appearances. She is currently a science teacher at Perrysburg Junior High.
Pheasant (1980) played football and basketball. He was a key member of two NLL championship football teams and one NLL championship basketball team. He was co-captain of the 1979 football team that posted a 10-0 regular-season record.
Derr s contributions to Yellow Jackets athletics came as coach and athletic director.
He coached wrestling and baseball and served as assistant athletic director.
Hockey: Titans host tournament
St. John s Jesuit will sponsor the eight-team Titan Invitational hockey tournament Friday through Sunday at Tam O Shanter. Cincinnati Moeller, Cincinnati St. Xavier, Garfield Heights Trinity, Elyria Catholic, Mentor Lake Catholic, Oxford Talawanda, and Mother Teresa of Ontario are the other teams.
The Titans defeated Lake Catholic for the championship last year. Each team will play four matches. It concludes Sunday with three consolation matches leading up to the championship match at 3:30 p.m.
Wrestling: Irish host Catholic Invitational
Central Catholic will host the 46th annual Catholic Invitational wrestling tournament this weekend at the Sullivan Center.
First-round action for the event 37 teams including Central, St. John s, and St. Francis de Sales will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday and conclude about 3 p.m. The second session, which includes quarterfinal matches, begins at 5 p.m. Semifinals will start at 10 a.m. Sunday, with finals at 3 p.m.
The defending champions are Cincinnati Moeller (large school) and Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary (small school).
Soccer: Knights hire Aliakbar
St. Francis de Sales has hired Khalil Lee Aliakbar as its varsity soccer coach.
Aliakbar is also the CEO and director of the Toledo Celtics soccer club, which he co-founded in 1987.
He has coached at the University of Findlay, St. John s Jesuit, and Perrysburg.
