ABOUT THE TEAM:
Coach: Mark Emans, first year
Last season: 4-6, 3-5 NBC
Returning letter winners: 17
Returning starters: Offense 6, defense 6
Schemes: Shotgun/4-3
Top players: Seniors Nick Walsh, 5-10, 205, LB; Joel Densic, 6-1, 190, TE; Tyler Harp, 6-1, 220, OT. Juniors Jared Rettig, 6-1, 180, QB; Todd Walters, 6-2, 180, SE. Sophomore Adam Duncan, 6-11, 175, RB.
Outlook: Emans, a former longtime coach at Wauseon, led the Indians to four Northwest Ohio Athletic League titles in 21 seasons. In 1993, the Indians went 14-0 en route to winning the state title.
Emans played linebacker at Bowling Green State University for four seasons, and was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in 1984.
The Flyers have not won a league title since 2001.
Emans said his new team's strengths will be team speed and quarterback play.
Rettig is back behind center after connecting on 176 of 278 passes for 2,838 yards. Rettig tossed a league-high 32 touchdowns and earned All-NBC second team honors. Rettig also rushed for 263 yards.
Walsh was named to the all-league first team.
Lack of depth, team size on the offensive line, and only eight seniors are possible trouble areas.
“We need to stay healthy to compete,” Emans said. “We have nice numbers but lack any real depth. The kids are eager to be successful and have bought in to our philosophy.”
