The senior wrestler won a Division III state title in the 145-pound weight class March 10.
Grime posted a 57-1 record this season with 21 pins. He also had 85 takedowns.
Grime wrapped up an impressive career with the third most wins in school history (187). A four-year starter, Grime qualified for the state meet three times. He placed twice, and became Archbold's ninth state individual champion by posting a 3-2 victory against Galion Northmor’s Conan Becker.
Grime also earned Academic All-Ohio honors for the second consecutive season, and is a two-time academic All-American through the National Federation of High School Sports.
Archbold coach Brian Becher said Grime is a coachable athlete.
“That's an attribute instilled in him from his family,” Becher said. “Gavin is very good at controlling ties and the pace of the match.”
Becher said Grime became known for his impeccable takedown defense.
He said Grime has yet to commit to a college but is leaning toward accepting a ROTC scholarship. But he is getting more interest from other colleges since winning at the state meet.
“On the mat Gavin is great at turning people, is very difficult to ride, and nearly impossible to turn,” Becher said. “Gavin is going to be impossible to replace — not just because of the wins and accomplishments he achieved, but his presence in the room every day in season and out of season. Gavin winning state will hopefully inspire [others] to believe that through hard work and a positive attitude that they too can achieve great things.”
