Editor’s note: This story was written prior to the Ohio High School Athletic Association’s announcement Friday that the regular season will be trimmed to six games.
With the July 31 Toledo Public Schools suspension of all City League sports through Oct. 1 due to the coronavirus pandemic, nonleague football opponents of the league’s six teams were left to find replacement games for contests scheduled for the first five weeks of the 2020 season.
By cancelling their football seasons, CL members Bowsher, Rogers, Scott, Start, Waite, and Woodward created a void of 30 games spread among 24 schools.
Six schools need to replace two nonleague games each.
■ Whitmer of the Three Rivers Athletic Conference lost its scheduled Week 1 (Aug. 27) game at Start, and its Week 3 contest at Waite.
The Panthers will now play Perrysburg in Week 1 (Aug. 28), with the home team still to be determined based on which county (Whitmer in Lucas County or Perrysburg in Wood County) ultimately allows a greater seating maximum for the game. Whitmer is still seeking a Week 3 opponent.
Perrysburg had lost its Week 1 game versus Woodward.
■ Southview of the Northern Lakes League was to play Rogers in Week 1 and at Scott in Week 3.
The Cougars will play at Swanton in Week 3, and Southview athletic director Jim Huss said the Cougars are discussing a Week 1 possibility with Lima Senior of the TRAC.
Lima Senior lost its Week 1 game versus Bowsher.
■ Swanton of the Northwest Ohio Athletic League lost its Week 2 game versus Bowsher and its Week 3 game at Rogers.
The Bulldogs will now host what will be considered a nonleague game in Week 2 against fellow NWOAL member Delta and will host Southview in Week 3.
The Swanton-Delta league game is set for Oct. 16 at Delta.
■ Oak Harbor of the Sandusky Bay Conference’s Bay Division lost a Week 4 game versus Woodward and a Week 5 game at Bowsher.
The Rockets will now host SBC Lake Division members Tiffin Columbian in Week 4 and Bellevue in Week 5.
Bellevue had lost its Week 5 game at Start.
■ Clyde of the SBC’s Lake Division lost three of its five nonleague games — Week 3 versus Start, Week 4 versus Dayton Ponitz Tech, and Week 5 versus Scott. Ponitz is one of the six Dayton City League schools that have suspended all sports.
The Fliers, defending Division IV state champions, will now play at Bowling Green of the NLL in Week 3, will host SBC Bay member Port Clinton in Week 4, and will host SBC Bay member Milan Edison in week-5.
BG had lost its Week 3 game versus Woodward, Port Clinton lost its Week 4 game at Bowsher, and Edison lost its Week 5 game at Woodward.
■ Tiffin Columbian, also from the SBC’s Lake Division, lost its Week 2 game at Waite and its Week 4 game at Start.
The Tornadoes will now play at Oak Harbor in Week 4 and are seeking a Week 2 replacement.
