The Anthony Wayne girls won the program's first Northern Lakes League tennis title since 2011.
The Generals, who won three of the five championship matches, finished with 38 points as a team last Wednesday at Perrysburg Tennis Center. Northview was second with 33, followed by Perrysburg (28), Bowling Green (23), Springfield (18), Napoleon (13), Southview (6), and Maumee (5).
Anthony Wayne junior Lilly Black won a second straight No. 1 singles title. Black defeated Maddie Peisley of Northview 6-2, 6-2 in the championship match. Black, who won a Three Rivers Athletic Conference title in 2019 as a freshman, transferred from Notre Dame Academy to Anthony Wayne before her sophomore year. Black won the 2020 NLL title and finished third at the Division I state meet last fall.
Anthony Wayne's Emily Szul won the title at No. 3 singles, while the Generals No. 1 doubles team of Jordyn Foukes and Mallory Rettig also took home the title.
Northview's Brynne Chaffee captured the title at No. 2 singles. The Wildcats also won at No. 2 doubles as Gina Baroudi and Maya Turner placed first.
TRAC TENNIS
Notre Dame won the Three Rivers Athletic Conference tennis tournament title on Saturday at Clay.
The Eagles tallied 38 points as a team, while St. Ursula finished runner up with 33 points.
However, the overall TRAC team champion has not yet been determined. There are still two regular-season matches that need to be played this week. The TRAC champion is determined by a combination of league regular-season matches and the tournament.
At No. 1 singles on Saturday, Notre Dame's Ellie Assenmacher won the title with a 6-0, 7-5 win over Lucia Spinazze of Central Catholic.
Bella Spinazze of Central took the title at No. 2 singles, while Notre Dame's Charlize Delos Santos won at No. 3 singles.
In doubles play, the Notre Dame's No. 1 team of Erin Sturgeon and Sarah Miller placed first. Megan Britsch and Kate Harms of St. Ursula won at No. 2 doubles.
SOCCER
Ottawa Hills senior Meredith Greeley scored her 100th career goal in a 3-0 win over Toledo Christian on Sept. 20.
Greeley, the 2020 Toledo Area Athletic Conference player of the year, was named to the All-Ohio second team last fall.
Ottawa Hills is 5-2-1 overall and 3-0 in the TAAC.
Greeley plans to continue her soccer career at Babson College in Massachusetts.
FOOTBALL
Stadium dedication: Longtime former Eastwood football coach Jerry Rutherford will be honored at a stadium dedication ceremony on Oct. 8.
The stadium in Pemberville will be renamed Freedom Field at Jerry Rutherford Stadium. Rutherford retired after 35 years at the helm of the Eastwood program following the 2016 season.
Rutherford compiled a 227-140 overall record at Eastwood. Rutherford’s teams won 10 conference championships and were conference runners-up nine times. He led Eastwood to 10 state playoff appearances. The deepest postseason run came in 2007 when the Eagles (11-2) reached the Division IV regional finals.
Rutherford's son Craig took over the program in 2017. Jerry Rutherford is an assistant coach on the team.
The ceremony will take place at 6:30 p.m. before the Eagles’ game against Rossford.
Otsego remains unbeaten: Otsego, the No. 3 ranked team in Division V, never trailed in a 30-19 home win over Rossford on Friday as the Knights remained undefeated.
Up 20-13 at halftime, Otsego (5-0, 3-0 Northern Buckeye Conference) scored the only TD of the third quarter and had 334 yards of total offense — including 146 on the ground.
Quarterback Joseph Dzierwa completed 10 of 13 passes for 188 yards and three scores. Chase Helberg hauled in two of the TD receptions and finished with four catches for 102 yards. Devin Coon, who had five catches for 79 yards, had the other TD reception.
Trent Leiter rushed for a game-high 130 yards and scored on a 26-yard run to open the scoring.
Rossford (3-3, 1-2 NBC) was led by QB Alex Williams, who completed 28 of 45 passes for 265 yards and three touchdowns. Ben Morrison had seven catches for 71 yards and two scores. Nevan Hanthorn had eight catches for 76 yards.
The Bulldogs had 320 yards of total offense.
VOLLEYBALL
The Springfield volleyball team hosted its 36th Annual Golden Spike Invitational on Saturday and the Blue Devils won the team title.
Springfield defeated Archbold 20-25, 25-20, 25-21. The Blue Devils then defeated Newark Catholic 25-16, 25-22 to take the championship.
Both sophomore Gretchen Sigman and junior Corrie Brown earned spots on the All-Tournament Team and Brown was named the tournament's MVP.
Sigman had 19 kills and three blocks against Archbold and then had 11 kills, eight digs, and three blocks against Newark Catholic.
Brown, who is recovering from a torn meniscus, had four kills, 35 assists, and three aces against Archbold. Brown then had 20 assists in the championship match.
Springfield is 10-3 overall and 6-1 in the competitive Northern Lakes League.
Blue Devils coach McKenna Reitz said her team has played in 11 matches over the last two weeks and has posted a 10-1 record, including a win over Northview.
“Honestly, playing every night has helped up stay focused on the match at hand,” Reitz said. “Every night we are playing we are getting better and stronger as a team. Every single player is stepping up and playing their role to their best ability. Consistency with our lineup has allowed the team to play for each other.”
