Lima Senior High School announced in a news release on Thursday that it will become a member of the City League beginning in the 2023-24 school year.
It is a four-year contract.
The City League currently consists of Bowsher, Rogers, Scott, Start, Waite, and Woodward high schools.
"Toledo Public Schools is excited to welcome Lima Senior to the City Athletic League," Toledo Public Schools deputy superintendent Jim Gant said. "The expansion of the league has numerous benefits for our student athletes, and those who attend Lima Senior. We look forward to working collaboratively with Lima City Schools to finalize the transition, and to begin a partnership that will enhance high school athletics in northwest Ohio."
Lima Senior Athletic Director John Zell said the school wanted to join a league rather than becoming independent.
“We want our student athletes to be able to compete for league championships and receive league honors,” Zell said in a news release.
Lima Senior joined the Three Rivers Athletic Conference when it was created in 2011. The conference is dissolving after next school year. Findlay, Fremont Ross, Whitmer, and Oregon Clay are joining the Northern Lakes League.
Zell said the Spartans might still play some of the TRAC schools, especially with their longstanding rivalry with Findlay.
