PORT CLINTON — Perrysburg senior Mason Deal and Bryan senior Jay Fortner cruised to district singles titles in Division I and II, respectively, on Saturday, while the St. John's doubles team of Tyler Wood and Jack Oswald claimed the Division I doubles title.
In Division I, one singles player and one doubles team advance to the state tournament from the northwest Ohio district, while four singles players and four doubles teams advance from Division II.
Deal defeated Southview freshman Isaac Vens 6-0, 6-0 in the singles final after defeating Clay senior Will Horvath 6-1, 6-3 in the semifinal. Vens knocked off Findlay's Austin Asada 6-1, 6-0 to reach the finals.
In doubles action, Wood and Oswald defeated St. John’s teammates Nathan Allen and Rafa Yazji 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 in the finals after beating Findlay's Max Hosey and Mac Robertson 6-7, 6-2, 6-4 in the semifinals earlier on Saturday. Allen and Yazji defeated Southview's JP McNerney and Hritik Dhar 6-3, 6-2 in the other semifinal.
Fortner defeated Lexington's Ethan Remy 6-2, 6-3 to earn the Division II singles title. He knocked off Lima Shawnee's Gabe Burke 6-2, 6-1 in the semifinal, while Remy defeated Ottawa Hills senior Jack Burke 6-0, 6-4 in the other semifinal.
Jack Burke will also advance to the state tournament after earning fourth place following a 6-2, 6-3 loss to Gabe Burke in the third-place match.
In Division II doubles, the Maumee senior duo of Braden Tucker and Gavin Yu qualified for the state tournament with a third-place finish. Tucker and Yu fell to the eventual district champions from Lexington (Tommy Secrist and Karl Etzel) 6-4, 5-7, 6-1 in a semifinal before defeating the Ottawa-Glandorf duo of Eli Schmenk and Joshua Walls 6-3, 6-1 in the third-place match.
Lexington's Secrist and Etzel defeated teammates Ryan Mercurio and Ross Drlik 6-4, 6-4 in the finals.
