High school track and field: Strength in sprints leads to 3rd-place finishes for Central Catholic

OAK HARBOR, Ohio — Central Catholic enjoyed success in the sprint events Saturday in the Division II district track and field meet at Oak Harbor High School en route to a pair of third-place team finishes.

Irish sprinters swept the 100-meter, 200-meter, and 400-meter dashes in both the boys and girls competitions. Solomon King took the boys 100 (10.90 seconds) and 200 (22.86), Sam Lee the boys 400 (50.03), Nyla King the girls 100 (12.50), Tianna Davis the girls 200 (26.12), and Mary Ellis the girls 400 (57.83).

Sandusky Perkins won both team competitions, with the boys scoring 155 points and the girls 121 points. Oak Harbor’s boys were second at 106 points, followed by Central at 98 points and Eastwood in fourth at 89 points. Eastwood’s girls were second at 113 points, with Central scoring 92 points, fourth-place Oak Harbor 81 points, and fifth-place Port Clinton 58 points.

Central’s boys also recorded victories in the 800 relay (1:21.97) and 1,600 relay (3:21.06), with Lee winning the high jump (6-4).

Rossford’s Ian Clark won the 800 (2:01.90), Oak Harbor won the 400 relay (42.37), Elmwood’s Jackson Childress won the shot put (50-7.25), and Eastwood’s Dalton Hesselbart won the pole vault (14-3).

The Central girls won three of the four relays, taking the 400 relay (48.70), the 800 relay (1:42.80), and the 1,600 relay (4:02.20), and Jayla Watson finished first in the 300 hurdles (47.39).

Rossford’s Clare Logan won the high jump (5-4) and the long jump (18-8.25). Oak Harbor’s Amelia Mizelle won the 100 hurdles (15.48), and Eastwood claimed victories in the shot put (Olivia Newsome, 121-4), the discus (Ava Kiefer, 37-9.25), and pole vault (Julia Sabo, 11-0).

DIVISION I AT FINDLAY: Findlay swept the team titles at the Division I district meet it hosted Saturday, with the boys scoring 118 points and the girls 112.

Ashland (85.5) finished second in the boys, with Fremont Ross (54.5) taking fifth. Lexington (100) was second among girls, with Fremont Ross (68.5) fourth.

Findlay’s Ben Ireland won the 400-meter dash in 48.34 seconds and anchored the winning 800-meter relay (1:31.12), while teammate Avion Miles won the long jump (21-9.75). Bowling Green’s Caleb Prater won the high jump at 6-1.

In girls competition, the Trojans’ Natalie Rakestraw swept the 100-meter (12.62) and 200-meter (26.44) dashes. Findlay also got a field-event double from Brianna Nichols, who won the shot put (39-2.5) and discus (134-10), and Katelyn Stechschul added a victory in the long jump (17-3).

Fremont Ross picked up field-event wins from Makenna Englund in the high jump (5-3) and Allison Taylor in the pole vault (11-0). Bowling Green won the 400-meter relay (50.37).

DIVISION II AT DEFIANCE: Bryan’s Joshuah Taylor and Wauseon’s Jonas Tester were double winners Friday night in the Division II district meet at Defiance.

Taylor won the 1,600 (4:30.09) and 3,200 (9:46.15). Tester won the 200 (23.42) and long jump (21-0.5).

Also in boys competition, Maumee’s Alex Stambaugh won the 300 hurdles (42.25), and Swanton’s Kayden Davis won the high jump (6-2).

In the girls meet, Wauseon’s Grace Rhoades won the 3,200 (12:00.66), with teammate Johanna Tester winning the high jump (4-10). Bryan’s Aquilina Cordic claimed victory in the 300 hurdles (46.57). Her teammate, Lexi Alspaugh, won the shot put (37-7.5).

With pole vault results not reported as of Saturday evening, Van Wert’s boys were first with 103 points, with Wauseon second at 82, Napoleon third at 74, and Maumee fifth at 62. Celina’s girls were first with 126 points, with Ottawa-Glandorf second at 99, Bryan third at 66, and Wauseon fifth at 48.

DIVISION III AT AYERSVILLE: Archbold’s won three relays en route to a second-place team finish in the Division III district meet Saturday at Ayersville High School.

The Blue Streaks, who finished with 94 points, won the 400 relay in 44.99, the 800 relay in 1:31.67, and the 1,600 relay in 3:30.00.

Tinora was first with 105 points.

Also in the boys meet, Holgate’s Addison Casillas won the 800 in 2:01.83 and Delta’s Joshua Tresnan-Reighard won the discus in 153-3.

Tinora won the girls meet with 89 points, four more than second-place Wayne Trace’s total. Patrick Henry (67) was third, followed by Montpelier (63) and Archbold (53).

Holgate’s Elisabeth Willett won the 1,600 in 5:24.49, with teammate Jolynn Eis winning the discus (114-5). Girls winners also included Delta’s Josilyn Welch in the 3,200 (11:47.96), Montpelier’s Chelsea McCord in the 100 hurdles (16.15), Archbold’s Chloe Merillat in the 300 hurdles (48.44), and Patrick Henry in the 3,200 relay (10:03.15).

DIVISION III AT ADA: Van Buren posted a pair of top-five team finishes in the Division III district meet Saturday in Ada, Ohio, with the girls placing second at 85 points and the boys finishing fourth at 58 points.

In the girls meet, Van Buren’s Ella Webster won the 1,600 (5:26.08) and teammate Rachel Cavera winning the high jump (5-0).

Among boys, Van Buren’s Andrew Parsell won the 110 hurdles (15.89). McComb, which finished fifth in the boys meet with 54 points, won the 400 relay (43.67) and 800 relay (1:31.43), with Kavon Bailey taking the long jump (21-2.50)

Columbus Grove won the boys meet with 148 points, with Bluffton second at 114. Kalida won the girls meet with 92 points.
