Here are updates from Friday’s high school football game between Southview and Anthony Wayne. This story will be updated after each quarter.
FOURTH QUARTER
After an Anthony Wayne punt 1:29 into the second quarter, Southview was unable to move into Generals territory as the Cougars continued to sputter on offense. Anthony Wayne tried to pounce on the opportunity, running the ball four times on six plays in hopes of killing clock, but punted again.
No matter: the defense continued to stifle Southview. England Allen nearly picked off Will Mayzes again on third-and-six and the Cougars were called for delay of game on the ensuing fourth down. Senior defensive lineman Blake Reed then sacked Avery Offenburg to force a turnover on downs, and the Generals killed the clock.
THIRD QUARTER
Marco Morrison appeared to break off a 76-yard touchdown run on the second half’s second scrimmage play but a holding call negated it. Joe Caswell, however, rushed for a 75-yard touchdown two plays later to give Anthony Wayne a 15-0 advantage. Southview couldn’t capitalize on good field position on its next drive as junior defensive lineman Cadence Carswell downed Avery Offenburg for a crushing sack.
The Cougars halted the Generals’ next drive on their own 49 to gain some life, as Offenburg hit junior running back Isaac Sexton for a 22-yard gain — Southview’s longest of the night to that point. Senior Anthony Wayne defensive back Carson Spradlin ended the threat by intercepting Will Mayzes on the next play; the Generals drove into Cougars territory before punting it away. Southview’s next drive was another non-starter and Anthony Wayne held the ball as the quarter drew to a close.
SECOND QUARTER
Anthony Wayne was forced to punt on the second play of the second quarter and recovered by forcing Southview to do the same. Turning to Joe Caswell once again on four straight runs to open their next drive, the Generals pounded their way into the Cougars’ red zone — only throwing the ball for the first time on their 13th play of the series. Senior Anthony Wayne kicker Marco Morrison kicked a field goal to put the Generals up 9-0 entering the half.
FIRST QUARTER
Southview won the coin toss and elected to receive. The Cougars used both of their quarterbacks early, deploying junior Avery Offenburg and sophomore Will Mayzes, but were forced to punt. Senior Anthony Wayne running back Joe Caswell rescued the Generals from the shadow of their own end zone with a 17-yard run, but the Generals stalled and punted. Mayzes made the first mistake for either team, as a high pass was picked off by senior Anthony Wayne defensive back England Allen. Caswell scored on the next play to give the Generals the lead.
Anthony Wayne swarmed Southview on the Cougars’ next possession and forced a three-and-out.
PREGAME
Southview will meet Anthony Wayne in Whitehouse Friday in perhaps the biggest game in the area so far this year. The Cougars are 4-0 and have rarely been threatened in coach Steve Hardy’s first year — their closest margin of victory this season is 16 points, over Springfield in Sylvania last week. The Generals, meanwhile, have yet to give up more than 10 points in a game this season. They shut out Southview 48-0 in 2021.
