Here are updates from Friday’s high school football showdown between Anthony Wayne and Perrysburg. This story will be updated after each quarter.
FOURTH QUARTER
Perrysburg’s Connor Walendzak put the Yellow Jackets in front by two scores with a four-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter. He added a second touchdown on a 38-yard run.
AW’s Joe Caswell scored with five seconds left.
THIRD QUARTER
Just when it looked like Perrysburg was pulling away, the Generals answered again.
The Yellow Jackets took a 17-7 lead on a 13-yard run by TJ Takats, coming after a fourth-down conversion.
On the first play of the ensuing drive, AW tailback Joe Caswell got loose for a 66-yard touchdown run.
A replay occurred on the next two possessions — a four-yard touchdown run by Takats followed by a 74-yard touchdown run by Caswell on AW’s first play.
SECOND QUARTER
Perrysburg and AW were scoreless in the second quarter.
The Yellow Jackets had a touchdown pass on fourth down that was called back because of a holding penalty. They were not able to convert the ensuing fourth-and-17.
FIRST QUARTER
Perrysburg struck first on a 21-yard pass from TJ Takats to University of Toledo commit Connor Walendzak, who weaved through traffic en route to the end zone. The Yellow Jackets went 72 yards in 13 plays, converting one fourth down.
It took all of four plays for AW to answer, as Cadence Carswell found England Allen open on a screen pass that went 63 yards for a touchdown.
Perrysburg took a 10-7 lead on a 41-yard field goal by AJ Bibb.
PREGAME
The most anticipated game of the local high school football season has arrived: 6-0 Anthony Wayne vs. 5-1 Perrysburg.
The Northern Lakes League rivals are 11-11 in their past 22 meetings and one of them has won eight of the past nine conference championships. And the winner of this year’s matchup will have the upper hand in the NLL race as the regular season winds down.
The Yellow Jackets are led by a high-scoring offense, with quarterback TJ Takats and running back Connor Walendzak, a University of Toledo commitment, acting as the catalysts. Perrysburg averages 42.2 points per game, ranking third in Division I in scoring offense.
The Generals, meanwhile, have one of the best defenses in the state, limiting opponents to just 169.7 yards and 6.7 points per game.
It’ll be strength vs. strength at Schaller Stadium in northwest Ohio’s high school football game of the year.
