Whitmer junior wrestler Savannah Isaac has earned the top spot in a national preseason ranking.
Isaac, who is a two-time national champion, is the No. 1-ranked wrestler in the country in the 200-pound weight class.
USA Wrestling, FloWrestling, and the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum this week released the 2022-23 preseason rankings for high school girls wrestlers. This national ranking evaluates female wrestlers in grades eight through 12 from all 50 states.
Isaac's performance at the U.S. Marine Corps Junior and National Championships in Fargo, N.D., in July vaulted her to the top.
Isaac won a U16 national title in the 200-pound weight class. She then followed that up by bumping up an age group and winning the U19 tournament title. Competing against recently graduated seniors with as many as four more years of experience, Isaac emerged as the champion at the most prestigious event in amateur wrestling. She entered the tournament ranked No. 4 and defeated then-No. 1 and current University of Iowa wrestler Sam Calkins of California 3-2 in the finals at 200.
Additionally, Isaac moved into the national pound-for-pound rankings for the first time at No. 11 (No. 6 for juniors).
Isaac won high school state wrestling titles as both a freshman and a sophomore.
Findlay sophomore Laney Oliver is now ranked No. 29 nationally at 200 pounds. Oliver finished second at the Ohio state tournament in the 190-pound weight class as a freshman.
