High school cross country: St. Francis, Notre Dame claim TRAC titles

The St. Francis de Sales boys and Notre Dame girls repeated their team championships on Saturday in the final Three Rivers Athletic Conference cross country meet held at the Oregon Recreation Center.

The Knights placed all five of their scoring runners among the top six places to post 17 team points, easily topping runner-up Findlay (55) in the boys race. Fremont Ross was third with 88 points.

Ethan Cope of St. Francis was the individual champion in a time of 16 minutes, 15.5 seconds. He was joined on the All-TRAC first team by teammates Rylan Winkler (second, 16:24.7), Jameson Heck (third), Sam Arquette (fifth), and Logan Dykema (sixth).

Rounding out the first team in the top seven spots were Adrian Stechschulte of Findlay (fourth), and Kaiden Westrick of Clay (seventh).

In the girls race, Notre Dame had a first-place team score of 29 points, topping runner-up St. Ursula (65) and third-place Whitmer (91).

Scoring for the Eagles and also earning first-team honors were Joelle Moore (second place, 20:19.5), Natalie Chryst (third, 20:29.1), Hailey Gomez (fourth), Tessa Hoyt (sixth).

The individual champion was Lily Good of Whitmer, who covered the course in 20:16.5. Rounding out the All-TRAC first team were Anna Steinmetz of St. Ursula (fifth), and Mackenzie Smith of Fremont Ross (seventh).

AW, Perrysburg defend NLL titles

OTTAWA LAKE, Mich. – At the Whiteford Valley Golf Course, the Anthony Wayne boys and Perrysburg girls defended their team titles at the Northern Lakes League cross country meet.

The AW boys had 37 points to edge Perrysburg (45), and Bowling Green was third at 75.

The Generals' Connor Long was the individual boys champion in a time of 15:38.2, and was joined in the top seven in earning first team All-NLL recognition by AW teammates Benjamin Gasiorowski (fourth), and Aiden Lengal (seventh).

Toledo area's cross country leaders for week of Oct. 2

BG's Aidan Novinsky was the runner-up in 15:50.6, and rounding out the top seven were Perrysburg's Anthony Clark (third) and Andrew Beeks (fifth), and Northview's Ben Urbina (sixth).

The defending Division I state-champion girls of Perrysburg had 16 points to dominate the girls race, topping runner-up Southview (96) and third-place Southview (100).

The Yellow Jackets placed all seven of their competing runners in the top eight spots, led by Ava Beeks (first, 18:23.4), Natalie Sanders (second, 18:50.0), Hannah Kersten (third), Annasophia Gower (fourth), and Sydney Daudelin (fifth).

Perrysburg's Taylor Moody (seventh) also earned first-team All-NLL honors, and teammates Sage Colon (eighth) made the second team. The only other school with a first team finisher was Maumee, which got a fifth-place spot from Lucy Porter.

Otsego boys, Eastwood girls repeat in NBC

GRAND RAPIDS, Ohio. – The Otsego boys cruised to a repeat victory in the Northern Buckeye Conference, and the Eastwood girls also defended their team title at Mary Jane Thurston Park.

Otsego had 25 points to best runner-up Genoa (52) and third-place Eastwood (114).

The Knights were paced by boys champion Wesley Kellermeier, who covered the course in 17:29.46. Otsego also got first-team All-NBC top-seven finishes from Joseph Brewster (third), Nathan Strahm (fourth), and Ben Nusbaum (seventh).

Micah Balsmeyer of Lake was second in 17:38.68, and rounding out the top seven were Nathan Cooper of Genoa (fifth), and Jakob Zibbel of Elmwood (sixth).

In the girls race, Eastwood had 23 points to top runner-up Woodmore (40) and third-place Genoa (86).

The Eagles were led by individual champion Haley Sponaugle, who ran a 19:33.87, and runner-up Leah Emch, who completed the race in 19:57.99. Also placing in the top seven for Eastwood were Talia Baum (fourth) and Z Ramsey (fifth).

Rounding out the All-NBC first team were Woodmore's Olivia Vogelpohl (third), Emma Hammer (sixth), and Jordan Beam (seventh).

Archbold, Liberty Center defend NWOAL titles

LIBERTY CENTER – The Archbold boys narrowly edged runner-up Wauseon to repeat their boys team title, and the Liberty Center girls slipped past second-place Patrick Henry for a repeat crown in the Northwest Ohio Athletic League.

Archbold got a three-point win (46 to 49), with Liberty Center (65) finishing third in the boys race.

The Blue Streaks were paced by two top-seven runners, Aden McCarty (fourth) and Caleb Harrow (fifth). The individual boys champion was Bryan's Xander Fackler, who ran a 16:04.58.

Wauseon had three runners place in the top seven and earn first-team all-league honors — Jackson Callan (second, 16:30.89), Aidan Pena (third), and Garrett Leininger (seventh). Rounding out the top seven was Matthew Marlow of Liberty Center (sixth).

In the girls race, Liberty Center scored 41 points to 49 for second-place Patrick Henry. Wauseon was third at 88.

Leading the Tigers were individual runner-up Gracie Miller (19:00.15) and MaKayla Meller (sixth).

The girls individual champion was Grace Rhoades of Wauseon, who ran an 18:56.12. She was joined in the top seven by teammate Ella Rhoades (fourth).

Rounding out the top seven were Bryan's Kate Thormeier (third), Patrick Henry's Mia Amador (fifth), and Delta's Josilyn Welch (seventh).

Ottawa Hills boys, girls repeat TAAC crowns

The Ottawa Hills boys and girls teams each dominated their respective fields in capturing repeat team titles in the Toledo Area Athletic Conference meet at Maumee Valley Country Day School.

The Green Bears boys placed their top seven runners in the top seven spots, and posted in the lowest possible team score with a 15. Toledo Christian finished second at 92, and Emmanuel Christian was third at 112.

The seven picking up first team All-TAAC honors were race champion Riley Nixon (16:47), runner-up Thomas Franklin (16:50), Michale Kelley (third), Sage Egan (fourth), Carson Mackey (fifth), Maxwell Chandar-Kouba (sixth), and Joe Mayer-Heckathorn (seventh).

In the girls race, Ottawa Hills had 19 points to top second-place Emmanuel Christian (61) and third-place Toledo Christian (62).

Pacing the Green Bear girls were individual champion JoAnna Kelley (19:32), runner-up Elanora Smith (19:42), and Audrey Nixon (third) and Anna Ellingson (seventh) also earned first team All-TAAC honors for their top-seven finishes.

Rounding out the girls top seven were EC's Jenna Ramsey (fourth), Northwood's Miriam Fowler (fifth), and Maumee Valley's Emily Porter (sixth).

Rogers boys, girls claim City League title

The Rogers boys cross country team defended its 2021 City League title and won the 2022 conference title with 29 points at Collins Park Golf Course. Waite finished second with 32 points, and Scott earned third place with 64 points. 

Due to an official’s error, no times were available for the boys race. Brandon Payne (Rogers) was first individually, Elias Valdez (Waite) earned second place, and Diego Torres (Waite) was third. 

The Rogers girls cross country team won with 28 points. Start finished second with 30 points. Sinai Douglas (Start) placed first with a time of 20:35.0, Katherine Wilt (Start) earned second with a time of 20:41.0, and Breayah Jefferson (Rogers) placed third in 23:58.0.
